Asbestos Awareness

In May 2013, asbestos was uncovered in the Tyne pedestrian and cyclist tunnel, and recently a basic shelter for walkers in a remote, mountainous area of Scotland was closed after asbestos was found in the building.

Asbestos can be present anywhere and not just in commercial or domestic properties. Although it is believed asbestos containing materials (ACM) could still be present in more over half a million properties around the UK , in particular in schools, hospitals, factories and residential housing estates, asbestos can still be hidden in unexpected locations.

During the period 1940 to the mid 1980’s asbestos was used throughout our our industry, from residential pipe lagging to use shipbuilding, the manufacture during this period was quite prolific.

Even after the complete ban in 1999, it is estimated that any structure, especially in the public sector, built or renovated up until the end of that year is liable to contain ACM. Our better understanding and asbestos awareness should constantly remind us all of a continuing, potential health risk.
