Asbestos in schools in the UK

Approximately 13,000 primary and secondary schools in the UK were built during the period 1945 and 1974, when the use of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) in building works was at its most prolific. Many more school premises would have undergone refurbishments during or since that period and therefore Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) potentially could have been introduced in to a previously asbestos free school. This suggests that a high proportion of our present schools contain asbestos. The following are examples of where Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) were used: pipe insulation, flue pipes, ceiling panels, partition walls, heater cabinets, window panels, sanitary ware, acoustic sink pads, vinyl floor tiles, rainwater goods.
