Asbestos Surveys in Schools

Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s Education Group (IOSH) has released details on the importance of managing asbestos in schools safely and with caution

It has been debated for many years as to whether asbestos containing materials should be removed entirely from our schools or if it should be left in-situ and managed.

In order to manage asbestos safely, an asbestos survey should be commissioned to locate any asbestos and record its current condition. Recommendations on how to manage the asbestos should then be followed through by means of a risk assessment and management plan. Any asbestos left in-situ should be labelled and monitored on a regular basis and the management plan kept up to date.

Fiona Riley from IOSH commented that ” if those responsible are complying with their legal obligations then it is extremely unlikely that teachers or pupils will be put at any risk from the substance during the course of their day-to-day activities”.
